Introduction

Join us for a unique opportunity to complete the stunning 30-mile Mortimer Trail, a historic long-distance route through the beautiful Welsh Marches. We only run this adventure once a year, making it a truly special experience for those eager to explore rolling hills, ancient woodland, and some of the most picturesque landscapes along the England–Wales border.

This two-day journey blends challenging hiking, rich history, and remote countryside views — perfect for walkers looking for a rewarding autumn adventure.

Day 1 – Kington to Aymestrey (Friday 30th October)

We meet at Ludlow Railway Station (SY8 2PQ) at 08:30, where a coach will take us to our starting point in Kington, close to the Welsh border.
From here, we begin the first half of the Mortimer Trail, heading south through forest tracks, open ridgelines, and historic estates.

  • Distance: Approx. 15 miles
  • Duration: Full-day hike
  • Grade: 4 – Challenging
  • Terrain: Long distance, varied elevation, woodland paths, farmland, and rolling hills.

Day 2 – Aymestrey to Ludlow (Saturday 31st October)

After an overnight stay in Aymestrey, we continue our journey towards Ludlow, finishing the trail beneath the shadow of the town’s medieval castle.
This day brings more scenic woodland sections, riverside walking, and gentle climbs with rewarding views.

  • Distance: Approx. 15 miles
  • Duration: Full-day hike
  • Grade: 4 – Challenging
  • Terrain: Undulating countryside, woodland tracks, and open landscapes.
