Introduction

Welcome to “Source to Sea: Severn Way 12-Day Challenge” - a fully guided, immersive hike following the River Severn from its upland beginnings in Hafren Forest to its tidal mouth at Severn Beach. Over 12 days, walkers will traverse upland moors, canal towpaths, rolling valleys and historic towns, covering approximately 300-350 km (depending on route variations).

This is not just a walk - it’s a deep dive into geography, history, and the landscapes that shaped this mighty river. Expect early rugged climbs on Day 1, gentle riverside walking in the middle days, and tidal estuary walking near the end. Because of the variety of terrain and daily distances, we classify it as a Grade 4 hike (see below for what that means).

Day 1: Hafren Forest → Llanidloes (21 mi)

Your journey begins in the heart of the Hafren Forest, surrounded by pine trees and mountain air. The trail climbs gently towards the source of the River Severn, marked by a small peat bog high in the Cambrian Mountains. From here, the adventure truly begins — descending through forest tracks and open moorland before reaching the charming market town of Llanidloes.

Day 2: Llanidloes → Newtown (17.5 mi)

Walk through quiet valleys and along winding country lanes as the Severn gathers strength. This section features rolling hills, peaceful woodland, and picturesque farmland, leading to Newtown, a lively riverside town with a rich textile heritage.

Day 3: Newtown → Welshpool (14 mi)

A more relaxed day as the trail follows the tranquil Montgomery Canal towpath for much of the route. The canal and river intertwine here, creating a peaceful corridor full of wildlife. The day ends in Welshpool, where history and the rural Welsh countryside meet.

Day 4: Welshpool → Shelton (Shrewsbury outskirts) (23 mi)

A long and scenic day that leads you out of Wales and into England. Expect wide river meadows, farmland, and charming hamlets. The River Severn meanders toward Shrewsbury, a historic town almost encircled by the river.

Day 5: Shrewsbury → Ironbridge (23 mi)

Leaving the medieval town of Shrewsbury, the route takes you through open countryside and along peaceful riverside trails before arriving in Ironbridge Gorge, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The world’s first iron bridge stands proudly as a reminder of the river’s industrial legacy.

Day 6: Ironbridge → Bridgnorth (10 mi)

A shorter day after two long ones, with a mix of woodland paths and elevated viewpoints. The trail winds above the river and offers sweeping views before descending into Bridgnorth, known for its dramatic cliffs and the UK’s oldest inland funicular railway.

Day 7: Bridgnorth → Bewdley (14 mi)

Follow gentle riverside tracks through farmland and forest, passing through small villages and hamlets before reaching Bewdley, a Georgian market town with riverside pubs — perfect for relaxing after a rewarding day.

Day 8: Bewdley → Worcester (17 mi)

Continue through the Wyre Forest and quiet Worcestershire countryside before arriving in Worcester, a historic cathedral city on the Severn. Enjoy time to explore the riverside walks and medieval streets.

Day 9: Worcester → Tewkesbury (19 mi)

A scenic and relatively flat section following flood meadows and canal paths. The historic town of Tewkesbury awaits — famous for its medieval abbey and half-timbered buildings.

Day 10: Tewkesbury → Hempsted (Gloucester) (17 mi)

Enjoy a mix of rural trails and canal-side walking as you head toward Gloucester, a city steeped in Roman and maritime history. The cathedral and historic docks offer great opportunities for rest and exploration.

Day 11: Gloucester → Frampton-on-Severn (20 mi)

The trail widens here, passing floodplains and quiet villages with glimpses of the Severn’s tidal reach. Frampton-on-Severn offers quintessential English countryside charm — and the village green is one of the longest in England.

Day 12: Frampton-on-Severn → Severn Beach (26 mi)

The final, most rewarding day. The path follows the Severn Estuary, where the river broadens and meets the sea. Expect expansive views, saltmarshes, and the occasional glimpse of the Severn Bridges in the distance. You’ll finish at Severn Beach, marking the true end of the River Severn’s 220-mile journey.

Grade

What does Grade 4 mean?

  • Daily walking of 14–26 miles / 22–42 km (some days longer)
  • Mixed terrain: upland moors, forest tracks, footpaths, canal towpaths, riverside mud, occasional tidal/inundated sections
  • Navigation required: in upland and remote stretches paths may be faint or unmarked; route-finding skills advised
  • Physical demand: good fitness is required — you should be comfortable walking for 6–8+ hours with varied terrain
  • Weather exposure: especially near the source and on moorland; strong winds, bogs, rain can make conditions strenuous
  • Limited escape options: in some remote segments, alternative exit options may be sparse
